He was also lecturer and professor in the furniture and interior design department at the Academy of Art from 1957-76. Born in ØsterVrå, Denmark in 1929, designer Poul Kjaerholm began his career as a cabinetmaker’s apprentice in 1948. He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, graduating in 1952, and subsequently taught there until 1956. Poul Kjaerholm is an essential figure in the history of twentieth century design. His is a chapter of dualism: between craftsmanship and industry, art and engineering, nature and man. Yet through his exceptional work, these distinct elements are united into one. Poul Kjærholm was a ‘furniture architect’, a term he preferred to the label of designer.
