Beyond Stordalen Mire, analysis of 16S rRNA gene surveys indicated a global distribution of this clade, predominantly in anaerobic, carbon-rich and cold environments. These findings establish the SMCs as four novel phenotypically and ecologically distinct species within a single novel genus, distinct from C. exile clade at the phylum level. In our study, we analyzed field-scale methane emissions measured by the eddy covariance method at Abisko-Stordalen Mire for three years (2014–2016). This dataset provides measurements of the diffusive flux of methane (CH₄), a strong greenhouse gas, to the atmosphere from three subarctic lakes located on the Stordalen Mire in northern Sweden. We measured turbulence-driven diffusive fluxes of CH₄ with floating chambers during the ice-free seasons of 2010 to 2017, approximately every 1⁠ – ⁠2 weeks, from different locations in the lakes. The Stordalen site is located East of Abisko village. The Stordalen Mire is characterized by discontinuous permafrost with palsas.
